Finding stuff in slackware

Wew! My last post was so angsty I feeled embarased just looking at it.

OK so I'll try to help some peoplenow to get on a better mood now. Let's talk about Slackware.

If Slackware is famous for something is for being hard on newbies. That said, it is possible to get things working if you keep on trying. Unfortunately, finding help for slackware isn't exactly easy. I had a lot of trouble geting X to work, then getting X to work with my mouse.

Google is your frind they say, so um... ok I googled for these words forever: "xorgconfig mouse problems", "slackware do not detect mouse", "where is the mouse by default".

I got nowhere but I was able to fix my problems by doing these tricks. Firstly. Get a LiveCD that works on your PC. I love Ubuntu, it's free and they ship it to you if you care to wait for it. But really, any Live CD will do.

The configuration for your X server is located in /etc/X11/xorgconfig Just copy this file to a floppy and you there you go! a (kinda) working X server. By the way, to copy to floppy just type mount -vt auto /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy. Feel free to ad a sudo in there if you are not root, the floppy now is accesible in /mnt/floppy, but only if that location exists! so create it first.

But this didn't fix my mouse problem. That's because the mouse is located in different device ports for different systems. So how to find your mouse? well open that xorgconfig file and find the mouse section, in the device option, point it to /dev/mouse. Now if your mouse is not detected on /dev/mouse, let's make it do so!.

You just have to type ln -si /dev/mouse /dev/wherever_your_mouse_is. That creates a link from /dev/mouse to your mouse. It works but, now, wheres is the danged mouse? well, it definitively is located somewhere in /dev. the common ports are the /dev/ttySx series, or /dev/input/mice. Mine was on /dev/ps2. But how to find out wich one? if anything fails, you can manually probe each of the common ports. This is one of the secret tricks of linux. You can actually see the code generated by your mouse! to do this we use the standard tool cat. Just do cat /dev/ps2 and move your mouse, if that's where your mouse is you will see code appear as you move it, a la Matrix if not, just Ctrl+c to get out of it and try another one.

This say was the last day of my dear Bimbo (named after the white bread brand).

He was so sweet, he has always by my side. He took care of every kitty we were helping, he loved food and he loved us. He could be so annoying! He loved to sleep in my bed, even if I had to change the pillow covers from all the cat hair. He would follow me and find me wherever I hid from him, and he would simply jump into my lap, not minding if I'm working and he was ruining my paperwork.

And I miss him so much, I just feel like crying all day.

Rest in peace my dear kitty, I will always treasure those moments you gave to me. sayonara...

How to record movie songs

So, I must comment on the usefull that Audacity resulted. Todey I transfered from VCR to PC some songs and that program has everything you need to polish things up.

By the way, the songs were several anime opening / endings. I can't recommend you enough "Tattoo Kiss" by R.O.R. from Kaleidostar, awesome trance/jpop songs!

Can't wait to get a video capture card. But the thing is, you don't need one of those to record from TV, at least not for music. Virtualy all VCR come with A/V outputs and all PC come with a microphone input that looks like a stereo jack. The only thing you need is a stereo jack converter, they sell them at radio shark.

When you get the VCR and the PC set up, fire up audacity and simply hit record (push the red button). Let some space before and after the song you want to record. Then select some silence and go to effects. Choose Noise Removal, that's what we want. This is a 2 step effect, first click get noise profile. Then select all (Ctrl+A) and choose noise removal agan, but now click ok at the bottom of the window. Viola! Noise removed. Have fun!

I have to mouse devices. One has a defective button. It dobleclicks and holds down the left button. The other one is broken.

Oh and i'm still prisioner of my 4gig drive.

My main harddrive is about to die, so I'm using an old drive, with xp. XP is very blue, it is very ad-hoc because it feels so blue when your favorite apps are far far away.

The Fox of a Hundred Tails (Tabbrowser revived!!!)

There are a japanese folktales about magical Foxs, they grow a new tail for every hundred years, the number of tails is then a symbol of their age, wisdom and power.

The Mozilla FireFox browser has a similar feature, it can grow many tabs, you probably know that already, what you should know is that to make the tabs REALLY cool you need something known as the TBE or the Tabbrowser Extension, an extension is like plug-in or ad-on, but is completely integrated and ads features that makes us sure that Xul is at pair with Gtk+.

In other words, uber cool interface features like taking a tab from a window and droping it in another windows and such, very plastic and nice, can you say C.U.S.T.O.M.I.Z.A.T.I.O.N? this beauty has it all, it is the canonical "Should be there by default" extension, go get it as soon as you can ^^!

My firePETfox and I (New browser release)

Well firefox is almost at the one milestone with this 0.9 version and the question is... what's new?

Well, the browser feels faster in overall. The new theme is borning but that's ok since it is supposed to prevent cultural-shock for new users. For those who need an sleeker look there is the new theme manager.

This is not a real change, since it only means that now to switch themes you don't go
Tools>Options>Themes Now you just go Tools>Themes.

The other new kid in the neighborhood is the extension manager wich like the themes manager is in the tools menu.

The extension manager does look good, but it is a step back in usability, buttons are just too big and you have to scroll even more. What they got right is that now you can ask extensions to upgrade themselves and there's the prototype version of the novel uninstall extension feature.

Probably the most obvious difference is the extensions room in firefox's page, wich has become more beginner-friendly, but just a little less poweruser-friendly. The missing extension that inmediatly shine by it's absence is the tabbrowser extension by piro.

Piro, if you're reading this (wich you are not)! please release it for 0.9! Thousands upon thousands of souls vry for your fine craft!

Overall, it is a great upgrade but if you have heavily moded your FF instalation or are very fond of the tabbrowser extensions, stick with 0.8 until they are released.

June 04 Update (About: E-Mail)

So I've neglected you to no end my blog.

As much as I'd like to write here a lot I often get distracted.

The point is that I should start ranting a little more so what have we got?

Fastmail, yup that's a good topic. Fastmail has decided to offer file storage as an added service, and I've to say it sounds very good. I'll make my site there I think. The scary thing is that they start to resemble yahoo in that they are adding a lot of 'extra' services that one wonders where are they getting the resources to do it... never mind.

Truth to be told, they give a terrific free service, I'm almost compelled to pay them. But every time I pay for something I experience a hard disappointment.

This is not to say that I'm not going to ever paid them but that I'm afraid that paying them would hurt me in some ironic way. But then again I'd better wait to have a credit card before worrying about that kind of decisions.

This is my version of an "unbiased" analysis. Leave or Take it... plz?

I'm free, now, I have plenty of time to blog around along doing all sort of things I've been waiting to do for years!

As I work my way through blogging I imagine that I could write a book about all the reasons not to blog and how to overcome them . ¬¬ thing is I'm still researching the subject.

The thing is this blog isn't read by anyone now but if in a distant future somebody takes a look at it I should make sure it doesn't embarrass me, fat chance I've already ruined it from the begining.

Second post and I have thing to blog! Firstly i lost the first oportuniti to sign in subjects in FIME my alma matter. Now i hope to get in by wendsday. Today I witnessed an epileptic attack and its shocking to see it at only a meter of distance! In the office they had me going up and down more times than in my entire service there!

On another note some lamer wrote an article bashing anime [es] that i had to reply (my reply is there too). [es] means it is in spanish only. I'll try to post again about webcomics today.

Blogging in Blogger's blog! (first blog)

Well this seems FAR more fast and easy than pitas, even if pitas is ads free it is very unconfortable to add entries and to have a link as the center of every entry. Yay me! Well i've been wanting to do this since the last millenium (literaly) and this seems like the beginning of a long story! I want to say thanks to Blogger and start with the show! *eph!* ok first ad some links then blog, ok ppl here me go!
